A discussion of some of the key takeaways from weeks 4 and 5.

Week 5 Assignments (due by 11:59pm on Wednesday, 30 September)

As in previous weeks, your assignment for this week is to formulate a detailed question about something in the required readings that you find confusing or intellectually unsatisfying, give an objection to one of the readings' arguments, or do some independent research that gives us some reason to doubt what the author(s) say.

I thought that week 3's two submission options went well, and so we're going to do it again:

  1. Option 1: Post to Slack

Post a written version of your critical feedback in the #week5 channel on Slack. If you submit the assignment in this way, it is due by 11:59pm on Wednesday, September 30th. If you take this option, I will answer directly in slack.

  2. Option 2: Come to an optional zoom meeting

I will again host an optional zoom meeting on Tuesday, September 29th from 1:10–2:25*. If you would like, you can just come to this zoom meeting and raise your critical feedback there. We can also talk through the readings in whatever ways you would like. You can click on this link to go to the zoom meeting.

I am holding the zoom meeting on a Monday this week because I will be giving a talk about language and artificial intelligence on Thursday, October 1st at our usual time. I will post a link to the feed for that conference when I have more information about it.

()*Note on Zoom timing: Normally for the rest of the term, I will have our zoom meetings on Thursdays, 1:10-2:25. However, this week I have to give a talk at an online conference at that time. So I decided to go with out other scheduled class time, which is on Mondays. But this week, CUNY is closed on Monday and classes are happening on a Tuesday schedule. So that's why we're having the zoom on Tuesday. Sorry this is so confusing!)
