(Write out brief answers to this week's discussion questions and submit them via a direct message to me on Slack no later than 11:59pm on Sunday, November 28th. Your answers should be brief, no more than a few sentences each. Be prepared to discuss them in class.)
1. Turing considers various objections to his claim that computers will one day be able to think. Which of these did you find most compelling, and why?
2. According to Searle, his "Chinese room" argument shows that a computer doesn't have to be able to think in order to pass the Turing test. Explain this argument as briefly as you can.
3. What is the best objection to Searle's argument that you can think of? (I.e. what is the best reason to think that Searle hasn't shown that computers can't think?)
This week's Zoom meeting will be on Monday, November 29th, 11:10AM–12:25PM. Here is the link to join.
